Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters
One of the oldest tennis tournaments in history was founded in 1897, 127 years ago, and the first champion was tennis legend Reginald DOHERTY. To this day, the event is held on the clay courts of the Monte-Carlo Country Club. The Monte-Carlo Country Club is the main tennis club in Monaco that was founded thanks to the American philanthropist George Butler, a great patron and lover of tennis. Each year, the winner of the championship receives a prize from one of the members of the princely family.
In 1969 the tournament joined the Open era events. Starting in 2009, Monte Carlo became the only ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament not to have a mandatory player commitment, and most of the top players still elect to play the event despite this status.
Rafael NADAL won the tournament eight times in a row from 2005 to 2012 and became the first man in the Open Era to win 11 titles at a single tournament, with the last win in 2018.
In 2020, the event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
